Over Fishing- A Global Crisis

Bycatch refers to the the unintentional removal of non-targeted species during fishing. As the video mentions, bycatch is happening a lot. The video also provides some solutions to overfishing including consumers choosing not to eat fish that are over fished. There are some ways to help consumers know what fish are endangered so they have the ability to choose not to eat them including restaurants putting information in their menus about the fish. Some restaurants have already started doing this.

  2. As the video said, we could stop eating the fish that are being overfished, but I think we would have a hard time convincing others to do it, especially in Maine, where we have a lot of fisherman.
Is there anyway to safely release the bycatch? I know lobstermen throw unwanted fish overboard when they are in their traps, could the same be done for commercial fishing?

  3. This is very interesting, do you think that fisherman could safely release the unwanted fish that are caught back into the wild?

  4. I didn't realize how many species have been depleted in our oceans, not just fish but dolphins and other species as well. We've lost so much of our ocean life, even if we try to stop overfishing and bycatch, will our ocean eve be as plentiful as it once was, and will we be able to sustain it?

  5. If we can stop bycatch and overfishing, it would be one step closer to helping ocean life and eventually ocean life would grow.

  6. Thats an interesting fact that 90% of the worlds fish population is gone. We need to set aside more ares that are closed off so that the fish can reproduce and bring back the fish population.

  7. I had no idea that 90% of the fish have disappeared. Do you know how long it took for that 90% to disappear? If we keep this overfishing up, soon our fish life will be depleted completely.

  8. Government needs o set up a fishing season until the population is back up to at least 75% and while there not fishing spend so time on developing new ways to fish with hurting other life

  9. We should stop eating the fish that are not overpopulated so they have time to repopulate. Is there laws about overfishing?
